APP Urges Senate GOP to Reject Impeachment of Trump

January 25, 2021

With House Democrats expected this evening to deliver an article of impeachment against Donald Trump to the Senate, attention in Washington will now turn to the impending trial, set to take place in February.

American Principles Project (APP) announced earlier this month that it opposes Trump’s impeachment and has already collected over 30,000 signatures on a petition urging Republicans to oppose it as well.

Today, APP’s executive director Terry Schilling released the following statement reiterating the call for Senate Republicans to unite against Democrats’ latest impeachment push:

“Here we are, approaching a week into Joe Biden’s presidency, and Democrats still can’t stop fixating on Donald Trump. Given that they just ousted him from the White House, one would think Democrat leaders would be eager to move on from Trump and focus on their own supposed policy priorities. But clearly they still feel threatened.

“That’s the only explanation for why they would continue to push for Trump’s removal and disqualification from office even after he has already left office. The left recognizes that the movement Trump started — giving political voice to everyday Americans forgotten and/or despised by elites — is still very much alive and well. So a message must be sent, to punish Trump and, by extension, his supporters for daring to question the election results and, more broadly, opposing their agenda.

“Democrats’ use of impeachment to go after a former president even after he has returned to private life sets a dangerous precedent and risks further inflaming tensions at a fraught time for our country. Moreover, it puts a lie to Joe Biden’s calls for ‘unity’ last week and exposes the Democrats’ true aim: to divide and conquer the country.

“Senate Republicans must recognize this political sham for what it is and reject its legitimacy. If the GOP is to build on Trump’s historic gains with voters in 2020 and potentially take back Congress in next year’s midterms, the party must stay united against Democrat attempts to demonize Trump’s movement and stifle future debate on issues like election integrity. Otherwise, Republicans may soon find themselves sharing Trump’s fate.”
