Today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced he is opposing legislation which just passed the state’s House which would prohibit biological males from competing in girls’ sports. DeWine stated he believes “[t]his issue is best addressed outside of government…”

In response, Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project, released the following statement:

“Gov. DeWine’s announcement today that he is not interested in defending female athletes in his state is nothing less than a cowardly capitulation to the woke left. The governor absurdly claims that the issue is better handled outside the government. Unfortunately, Democrats do not share his opinion — indeed, within the last couple weeks, the Biden administration has made clear they see no issue with using the power of the federal government to force states to allow biological males to compete against girls. Gov. DeWine’s inaction will only ensure that the Democrats’ war on female athletes is successful.

“Poll after poll has shown that the vast majority of Americans favor legally protecting a fair playing field for girls. All Ohioans, and especially the state’s women and girl athletes, deserve a leader who will stand up for their interests and against the elite-driven, woke pressure campaign to erase their rights and bully them into silence. If Gov. DeWine is incapable of doing something so obviously popular and necessary as protecting girls’ sports, he should expect voters to replace him with someone who will.”
