APP Celebrates Supreme Court Victory Protecting Girls’ Sports
Landmark ruling upholds state laws keeping girls’ athletics female
Washington, D.C. – June 30, 2026 – Today, the Supreme Court upheld state laws that preserve sex-based protections for female athletes by recognizing that “sex” in Title IX refers to biological sex, restoring categories that allow girls to compete and thrive on fair playing fields, free from invasion by biological males.
In West Virginia v. B.P.J., the Court held that the state’s law did not violate the Equal Protection Clause or Title IX, and that states are permitted to maintain sex-based distinctions in athletics in order to provide equal athletic opportunities for women and girls.
In Little v. Hecox, the Supreme Court declined to consider the constitutionality of a similar law in Idaho, holding unanimously that the law does not violate Title IX.
APP’s Terry Schilling released the following statement:
“The Supreme Court has handed down a landmark victory for fairness and sanity by restoring sex-based categories that protect female athletes. Girls deserve their own playing fields and private spaces, free from biological men who seek to invade them.
Since the start of this ugly chapter in our history, too many girls have been sacrificed to radical ideology, suffering serious injuries, facing shameful threats from officials and losing scholarships and opportunities to biological males.
The American people will rightly look back on this period with disgust, but the Court has taken a vital step to right these historic wrongs. More than half of states have already passed commonsense protections for young girls with the help of the American Principles Project; the rest of the nation must now follow suit.
This is a great victory for the safety and fairness of America’s female athletes.”
