Today, the North Carolina state legislature overrode Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of two bills, enacting into law HB 808, a ban on the prescription of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries to minors for the purpose of attempting to alter their sex, and HB 574, a prohibition on biological males competing in female sports at the K-12 and collegiate levels.

North Carolina is now the 23rd state to protect women’s sports in law, and the 21st state to take action to restrict sex-change procedures for minors.

In response, Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project (APP), released the following statement applauding the votes:

“The transgender industry continues to lose ground, and it’s no surprise why. The vast majority of Americans recognize the truth: male and female are biological realities that no drug or surgery can change. And our laws should recognize that reality and not pretend that men and women are arbitrary or interchangeable.

“Thankfully, North Carolina lawmakers have done just that. After their votes today, girl athletes in the state will now be assured of having the opportunity to compete on a fair playing field, and families can rest easy knowing their mentally distressed children will not be pushed down a road of dangerous medical experimentation. In other words, common sense has won out.

“It’s unfortunate, of course, that these votes were even necessary. Gov. Cooper’s craven vetoes should be a reminder that his Democratic Party cares more about kowtowing to far-left activists than appealing to the average voter. Those spurned voters should keep that in mind when they go to the polls to elect a new governor next year.”
