Late yesterday, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced he would not be signing or vetoing SB44, legislation prohibiting biological males from competing in female athletics at the K-12 and collegiate levels. The bill will now become law without the governor’s signature, making Louisiana the 18th state to formally protect girls’ sports.

In response, Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project (APP) released the following statement cheering the news:

“We are pleased to see Louisiana join the growing group of states acting to defend the integrity of girls’ sports. What makes this news especially encouraging is that it occurred with the passive acquiescence of Louisiana’s Democrat governor.

“This is a significant development. As polling has shown, a strong majority of voters, including many Democrats, oppose allowing males to compete against girl athletes. This is a major vulnerability for Democrat politicians, and Gov. Edwards’ decision not to veto the bill indicates they are beginning to feel the pressure. Pro-family conservatives must continue to keep up the fight—we are winning this battle.”
