Congress Passes Big Tech Antitrust Bills in Omnibus Package

December 23, 2022

Today, Congress passed three Big Tech antitrust measures as part of the much broader omnibus spending package. Included in the legislation were the Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act, the State Antitrust Enforcement Venue Act, and the Foreign Merger Subsidy Disclosure Act, all of which had passed the House on their own earlier this year.

American Principles Project (APP) previously endorsed the bills in September and urged their passage.

APP Policy Director Jon Schweppe released the following statement cheering the final approval of the measures:

“Big Tech is a big problem. Over the last few years, these massive companies have abused their near-monopoly status to distort the market, sideline smaller competitors, censor speech they disagree with, and, most alarmingly as the Twitter Files have shown, directly interfere in our elections. Lawmakers simply could not stand by any longer.

“While there is much more that still needs to be done to rein in Big Tech, this legislation gives a much needed boost to antitrust enforcers to crack down on these companies’ anticompetitive behavior. We look forward to working with the new Republican House majority next year to build on this win and take more concrete steps to investigate the many ways Big Tech has undermined our democracy and stop them from doing it again.”
