APP Praises Meta’s New Commitments to Protect Kids Online
Meta is deleting social media accounts for children under 13 and requiring age verification for Facebook and Instagram.
Washington, D.C. – August 26, 2026 – State AGs secured commitments from Meta to protect children from unhealthy, compulsive use of their platforms. Under the new commitment, Meta will implement age verification for Facebook and Instagram, remove accounts belonging to children under 13, heighten protections for “teen accounts” (ages 13-17), impose a 2-hour daily time limit for kids, lock the apps from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., mute notifications during school hours, use filters to block extreme content, and give parents the ability to disable the algorithmic feed and autoplay.
APP’s Terry Schilling released the following statement:
“Meta’s new policy prescriptions put common-sense protections into the hands of American parents. Age-verification is imperative. Our country cannot thrive if the next generation is stunted by artificially generated social isolation and anxiety. We cannot allow crippling social media addiction to destroy the lives of America’s children. These guardrails will shield the next generation from unhealthy social media use and set them up for success. Meta’s decision sets an excellent precedent. It is time for every tech company, starting with TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube (Google), to put the health and safety of children first.
APP has been on the forefront of the battle to protect American children from harmful online material for nearly a decade. It has helped implement age-verification legislation for pornography websites in 27 states and has worked to pass similar legislation for social media in 4 others. APP will not stop fighting until every child in America is safe from harmful online content.”
